Paul Verhoeven
Biography
Paul Verhoeven is a Dutch filmmaker who has worked in the Netherlands, the United States and France, and who became known for genre films laced with satire, graphic violence and explicit sex. Born in Amsterdam in 1938, he first drew attention with the television series Floris. His breakthrough came with the romantic drama Turkish Delight (1973), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and Dutch successes followed, among them Soldier of Orange (1977) and The Fourth Man (1983). In Hollywood he directed RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992), Showgirls (1995), Starship Troopers (1997) and Hollow Man (2000). Back in Europe he made Black Book (2006), Elle (2016) and Benedetta (2021), and Elle won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and a César for Best Film.
