Ne-Yo
Biography
Ne-Yo, born Shaffer Chimere Smith in Camden, Arkansas and raised in Las Vegas, is an American singer, songwriter, producer and actor who first made his name writing songs for other artists, including Mario's 2004 hit Let Me Love You, which led to a deal with Def Jam. His own debut album, In My Own Words (2006), and its single So Sick took him to the top of the Billboard charts, and later albums such as Because of You and Year of the Gentleman earned him three Grammy Awards, among them Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best R&B Song for Miss Independent. He moved into acting in Red Tails (2012), Battle Los Angeles (2011) and Girls Trip (2017), played the Tin Man in the telecast The Wiz Live! (2015), a role that brought a Critics' Choice nomination, and judged World of Dance from 2017 to 2020.

About the name
At the Las Vegas Academy, Ne-Yo used the stage name GoGo and was in an R&B group called Envy. The group appeared on amateur night at the Apollo and on MTV's short lived series The Cut.
About the name
Big D Evans, a producer Ne-Yo once worked with, came up with the stage name Ne-Yo. Evans said Ne-Yo views music the way the character Neo views the Matrix.
A role that slipped away
In 2000, after Envy disbanded, Columbia Records signed Ne-Yo. The label then dropped him, so his first album, which was already recorded, never came out.
Big break
Ne-Yo wrote "Let Me Love You" for the American singer Mario, which became his breakthrough. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and later remained at number one for nine weeks.
Big break
Ne-Yo was signed to Def Jam by then-CEO Jay-Z after he performed for the label's executives, even though Ne-Yo was not looking for a new contract.
Behind the camera
Ne-Yo founded the production company Compound Entertainment in 2007 and built it into a record label associated with artists such as RaVaughn, Paula Campbell, Sixx John, Adrienne Bailon and Shanell.
