Plot summary
Hostile craft descend on coastal cities around the world, and governments mount counterattacks. In Los Angeles, Marines from Camp Pendleton move in while the city is emptied. Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz, an Iraq War veteran who lost the men under his command on an earlier tour, is about to retire and is placed with the 1st Platoon, Echo Company. Under 2nd Lieutenant William Martinez, the platoon reaches a forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport. The alien ground forces appear to have no air support, so the Air Force plans to bomb the Santa Monica area, and the platoon has three hours to pull civilians from a police station. Advancing through the city, they are ambushed.

- Sony suspected filmmakers Greg and Colin Strause used resources from their visual-effects work on Battle: Los Angeles to make their competing alien-invasion film Skyline; the brothers denied any impropriety and Sony's arbitration against their company Hydraulx was later dismissed.
- Aaron Eckhart broke his upper arm falling off a ledge during an action sequence and kept working for the rest of the shoot without having the arm put in a cast.
- Jonathan Liebesman refused to shoot in 3D, fearing the handheld style would make audiences "throw up in two minutes"; the film used standard film intercut from three cameras instead, after a test with a Red digital camera failed.
