Nas

Biography

Nas is an American rapper, record producer, and entrepreneur who started recording in 1989 as Nasty Nas and first appeared on Main Source's 1991 track Live at the Barbeque. He signed with Columbia Records in 1992, then released his debut album Illmatic in 1994; it was later inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. His second album, It Was Written (1996), reached the top of the Billboard 200. A feud with Jay-Z from 2001 to 2005 ran alongside a comeback built on Stillmatic, God's Son, and the two-disc Street's Disciple, which restored his critical standing. He recorded Distant Relatives with Damian Marley and released Life Is Good (2012), which received a Grammy nomination in the Best Rap Album category. King's Disease (2020) brought his first Grammy win in that category. He also starred in Belly (1998), executive produced and narrated The Get Down, and is associate publisher at Mass Appeal magazine and a co-founder of Mass Appeal Records.
