Michael Jordan

Biography

Michael Jordan is an American former professional basketball player and businessman who played 15 seasons in the NBA from 1984 to 2003 and is regarded by many as the greatest basketball player ever. Raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, he starred at the University of North Carolina, making the winning shot in the 1982 NCAA Championship game as a freshman, and Chicago took him in the 1984 draft with the third pick. Nicknamed Air Jordan for his leaping and slam dunk ability, he built a reputation for prolific scoring, strong defense and fierce competitiveness, and he won six NBA titles with the Bulls, along with six Finals MVP awards and five regular season MVP awards. He finished with two seasons for the Washington Wizards, starred as himself in Space Jam (1996), was the focus of the documentary series The Last Dance (2020), and was named to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame twice, in 2009 and 2010.

Did you know?!

First role
Jordan was cut from his high school varsity basketball team as a sophomore because, at 5 ft, he was deemed too short. He responded by starring on the junior varsity squad, growing 4 inches the next summer, and averaging over 25 points per game in his final two varsity seasons.
Big break
As a freshman in coach Dean Smith's system, Jordan earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors. In the 1982 NCAA Championship game versus Georgetown, his jump shot won it, and he called that basket the major turning point of his basketball career.
A first
Jordan's No. 23 jersey was retired by the Miami Heat on April 11, 2003, even though he never played for the franchise.
