Marcel Herrand
Biography
Marcel Herrand was an actor who began working in the theater in 1920. He appeared in plays by Oscar Wilde, Arthur Schnitzler, John Ford, Jules Romains, and Albert Camus, and was directed by Jacques Copeau, Georges Pitoëff, and Charles Dullin. He also staged works by Henrik Ibsen, Julien Gracq, and Federico Garcia Lorca, earning acclaim for that side of his career. On screen he made twenty-six films, only two of them during the 1930s. Marcel Carné cast him in The Devil's Envoys (1942) and Children of Paradise (1945), where he played Lacenaire, a dandy killer at odds with Louis-Philippe's society. Herrand often portrayed polished, dangerous villains. Other memorable parts included Corentin, Ruy Blas (1948), where he was Don Salluste and the Queen of Spain, The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1949), playing Larsan, and King Louis XV in Fan-Fan the Tulip (1952).
