Biography

Joe Mari Avellana was a Filipino actor who also worked as a screenwriter, director and production designer. He began in college, announcing for DZFM Radio, then moved into stage work and acting. His first major movie role, the drug lord Ming in Cirio H. Santiago's TNT Jackson (1974), began a long collaboration with Santiago. In many of their films he worked at once as actor, production designer and assistant director, and he usually played antagonists in international action adventures such as Death Force (1978), Wheels of Fire (1985) and Bloodfist II (1990). Later he directed Tagalog films for the local market, including Kung Mawawala Ka Pa (1993), named Best Picture at the Metro Manila Film Festival in 1993, and Damong Ligaw (1997), a patriotic revolution tale that received the FAMAS Centennial Award. He was also well regarded on stage, appearing with Repertory Philippines in Tuesdays With Morrie and A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino. He died in 2011.
