Jean Byron
Biography
Jean Byron was an American actress who worked in film, television and theater, best known as Natalie Lane, the mother on The Patty Duke Show. Born in Paducah, Kentucky, she moved with her family to Louisville as a child, where she tap danced and sang as a teenager and won a regional Gateway to Hollywood competition in 1939. She sang on radio and with big bands before studying drama from 1947 to 1950. Her first film was Voodoo Tiger (1952), and she went on to appear in B-movies such as The Magnetic Monster (1953) and in many television guest roles. She also had a recurring role on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. She joined The Patty Duke Show in 1963 and stayed until it ended in 1966, later appearing on Batman, Marcus Welby, M.D. and Maude. On stage she played Mama Rose in Gypsy.

Byron got her union card after reading from a script and imitating a British accent for Sam Katzman's talent adviser Harry Sauber during a Players Ring play.
About the name
Asked for her name, Byron answered Imogene Burkhart. Katzman turned that down, so she offered Jean Byron, a stage name she was already using and that the Columbia Pictures brass preferred.
