Biography

India Adams was an American singer who spent much of the 1950s supplying the singing voices that actresses were credited with on screen. Born in Los Angeles, she was known above all for dubbing Cyd Charisse in The Band Wagon (1953) and Joan Crawford in Torch Song (1953). From 1965 to 1981 she made her home in England, and between 1969 and 1970 she understudied Ginger Rogers in a West End staging of Mame at London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. In 1991 she appeared alongside two fellow ghost singers, Jo Ann Greer and Annette Warren, in a cabaret revue called Voices, which Alan Eichler produced and John McDaniel directed musically, staged at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. That year also found her sharing a bill with other vocalists at the Catalina Bar and Grill, and she continued to perform in clubs and musicals. She died in 2020.
