Hema Malini
Biography
Hema Malini is an Indian actress and dancer who was born in Ammankudi, Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil-speaking family whose mother, Jaya, worked as a film producer. She trained at the Chennai-based Andhra Mahila Sabha and began as a dancer in a regional film in 1961, later appearing as a supporting actor in the Tamil film Idhu Sathiyam (1963). A 1964 attempt to be cast as a heroine failed when the director C. V. Sridhar found her too thin, and the part went to Venniradai Nirmala. She persisted and made her debut opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapnon Ka Saudagar, going on to appear in close to 155 films. She also produced and directed two films and directed the television serial Noopur. In the 1970s she was paired on screen with Shashi Kapoor and Dev Anand, and she had eight hits opposite Rajesh Khanna between 1980 and 1987.
