Biography

Glenn Quinn was an Irish actor who built a screen career in the United States. Born in Dublin, he moved to the United States in 1988. He started with commercials and a music video appearance, and had a small speaking part in the pilot of Beverly Hills, 90210. His first major film role came in the musical Shout (1991), and he went on to play Mark Healy on Roseanne, a part he held from the third season through the show's final season in 1997. Other film credits included Dr. Giggles (1992) and Campfire Tales (1997). In 1999 he joined Angel as the half-demon Allen Francis Doyle, a role written without an Irish accent but one that let him use his own; Whedon said the character became a fan favorite. His last film was R.S.V.P. (2002).

  1. Languages

Quinn spent seven years using an American accent on Roseanne, so he was glad when producers gave him the part of Allen Francis Doyle in 1999 on Angel, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off. Joss Whedon, the series creator, suggested he speak in his native Irish accent.

  2. First role

After eight auditions for Brandon Walsh and Steve Sanders, Glenn Quinn landed his first speaking line in the 1990 pilot of Beverly Hills, 90210. Casting director Johanna Ray gave him two lines, but he was barely visible in the broadcast.

  3. A role that slipped away

Whedon said the character was meant to die early in season one, but he became a fan favorite. Whedon told Quinn and promised him a "hero's exit".

  4. First role

Quinn's first major film role came in 1991, in the musical Shout, which starred John Travolta and Heather Graham. In that film he shared an on-screen kiss with Gwyneth Paltrow, who was making her debut.
