Giulio Base

Giulio Base is an Italian actor and director. He studied acting at Florence's School for Dramatic Art, which Vittorio Gassman directed. After years of acting, he turned to directing with Crack (1991), based on a stage piece he had already directed and performed. It played at the Venice Film Festival and won a best first work prize at San Sebastian. His road movie The East (1992) screened in Venice and at Toronto's Festival of Festivals, where it won the Audience Award. Policemen (1996), a European coproduction, took a best film prize at Arcachon. The West (1998) followed as a sequel and won a Special Jury Award at Annecy. La Bomba (1999), a mafia comedy set in New York with Shelley Winters, became his biggest European success. He also directed the television film Padre Pio (2000), the 2005 tale of Peter with Omar Sharif, and the 2006 mainstream film The Inquiry, released in the US as The Final Inquiry.
