Biography

Florence Rice was an American film actress who broke into acting in the late 1920s. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Smith College. After stage work on Broadway, she went to Hollywood and made nearly fifty movies from 1934 to 1943. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer often cast her as the dependable girlfriend, then gave her bigger parts, some in prestige pictures. Though she never became a major star, she was paired several times with Robert Young. Among her most widely seen films were Double Wedding (1937), where she received third billing after William Powell and Myrna Loy, Sweethearts (1938) opposite Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, and the Marx Brothers comedy At the Circus (1939). She also performed on radio programs like Hollywood Playhouse. Her roles diminished in quality during the 1940s, and she retired in 1947. Rice died in 1974.
