Biography

Ernest Lee Thomas is an American actor whose television comedy work made him familiar to sitcom viewers. He was born in Gary, Indiana, and started professionally on the Broadway stage, appearing in revivals of Love for Love and The Member of the Wedding. Did you know?!

  1. A role that slipped away

While What's Happening!! was in its first season, Thomas was among the last two actors up for Kunta Kinte, the lead in the miniseries Roots, a part that went to LeVar Burton. Thomas instead took the smaller role of Kailuba in that miniseries.

  2. Big break

Thomas won the lead role of Roger "Raj" Thomas after auditioning for a sitcom loosely based on Cooley High; he was the only cast member kept from the poorly testing pilot.
