First role
Jarman's first major professional commission was to design sets and costumes for Jazz Calendar, a 1968 ballet. Frederick Ashton choreographed it, and Rudolf Nureyev was in the cast.
Big break
Jarman entered film production design after filmmaker Ken Russell, whom he met by chance, asked him to create the sets for The Devils (1971) and Savage Messiah (1972).
A first
Jarman's first music video was Broken English: Three Songs by Marianne Faithfull, which visually interpreted three of her songs. Making one twelve-minute video covering three songs was rare then, since music videos were still uncommon.
Big break
In 1968, John Gielgud saw Jarman's designs for Jazz Calendar and invited him to work on a production of Don Giovanni.
Beyond film
Jarman directed the Pet Shop Boys' 1989 concert tour, a theatrical production that used costume and films made for individual songs.
