Chien-Lien Wu
Biography
Chien-Lien Wu is an actress from Taipei who was studying at the Taipei National University of Art when a photograph of her reached Sylvia Chang, who passed it to director Johnnie To as he looked for a lead. A Moment of Romance (1990) followed, and it made her a star across Asia. She kept up her studies while taking occasional screen parts, and in 1994 she received an HKFA Best Actress nomination for the horror film The Returning, appeared in Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), and launched a singing career. Milkyway cast her as a killer in Beyond Hypothermia (1996) and again in Intruder (1997). She won the Hong Kong Critics Society Best Actress Award and an HKFA nomination for Ann Hui's Eighteen Springs (1997), playing a determined young woman. She later played the tragic 1930s actress Ruan Ling-Yu in a Mainland television series, and worked in China, Singapore and Korea.
