Candy Johnson
Biography
Candy Johnson was an American go-go dancer whose frantic twisting made her a regular presence in 1960s beach party movies. Born in Los Angeles and raised in San Gabriel, California, she began tap lessons at five with her dancer mother and made her television debut at six. After high school she worked as a long-distance telephone operator while dancing the twist in local clubs, and a talent manager paired her with the rock group the Exciters, an act that first played in Palm Springs in 1962 and became popular in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix. Her high-speed style, promoted as Miss Perpetual Motion, brought her roles in four films from American International Pictures, among them Muscle Beach Party (1964), Bikini Beach (1964) and Pajama Party (1964). She also recorded two albums with the Exciters and performed at the New York World's Fair. Her career had wound down by the end of the 1960s.
