A change of course
Before turning to television, Todd trained to be a dentist, but the Second World War interrupted when he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and served as a navigator.
Big break
In a pub, Todd met the scriptwriters Ray Galton and Alan Simpson and convinced them he was an actor. That bluff got him a policeman role in the Sid James comedy series Citizen James.
A first
In 1972, Todd starred as Dan, a lavatory attendant, in his own series In for a Penny. It was the only starring role of his career.
