Aleksey Batalov
Biography
Aleksei Batalov was a film and stage actor, born in Vladimir into a family of Moscow Art Theatre actors. He made his film debut in 1945 with a cameo in Zoya, and after graduating in 1950 from the acting school of the Moscow Art Theatre he spent three years with the Central Theatre of the Soviet Army before rejoining the Moscow Art Theatre troupe through 1957. He broke through in The Big Family (1954), whose ensemble won a Best Actor award at Cannes in 1955, and found international acclaim opposite Tatyana Samoylova in The Cranes Are Flying (1957). He won the Jussi Diploma of Merit in 1962 and the State Prize of the USSR for 9 dney odnogo goda (1961). A director of three films, including The Gambler (1973), he made a comeback in Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears (1980), which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. He died in 2017.
