Plot summary
The director Deniz Soysal is writing his first book, about his own family and friends, and asks Orhan Şahin to look it over. Orhan has lived in London for years and has not come back to Turkey, but he agrees. Deniz lives in a waterside mansion on the Bosphorus with relatives whose fortunes are fading fast. In that house Orhan is pulled into the tangle of Deniz's relationships, his difficult-to-read friends and the family around them. Neval, a friend of Deniz, and Yusuf, Deniz's lover, belong to that circle. Walking the city again, Orhan revisits the neighborhoods where he grew up and the people he left behind, and old feelings return to him.

- Ferzan Özpetek's Red Istanbul was expected to start shooting in September 2015 but was held up by the delicate social and political situation in Istanbul, finally rolling on 12 April 2016 for seven weeks. Safety concerns meant some parts of the city could not be filmed at all.
- Red Istanbul brought Ferzan Özpetek back to shoot in Istanbul 16 years after his second work, Harem Suare.
