Plot summary
Two hundred years of Earth Defense Force rule over Mars ended when the colonies and the Marauders, under Alec Mason, formed the Red Faction. That alliance broke when Alec's wife Sam was killed and his daughter Lyra was abducted. Jake, ten years old, said white soldiers had done it. By 2145 Alec is a drunken troublemaker while his son Jake serves as a Red Faction soldier. Jake and Tess De La Vega are sent to a neutral zone where the Earth Defense Force battleship Hydra is going down, to recover its technology before anyone else can. Rival soldiers reach the wreck first.

- Because of budget limits, Red Faction: Origins had to drop the game series' best-known feature: the elaborately staged destruction of buildings and the surrounding environment.
- The film was shot in Bulgaria, where a huge old steel mill from Soviet times stood in for the colonist settlement of Eos, and nearby caves were used for further filming.
- To make the film resemble the games, the team worked heavily from the game's concept drawings: the architecture of a bar in the first scene is identical to the game, and spaceships and weapons were taken from it.
