Plot summary
Pamfir returns to his village in Bukovina, in western Ukraine, after several years working abroad. He has given up smuggling and wants to earn his living honestly, setting an example for Nazar, his teenage son. His wife Olena and his parents are nearby, and the Malanka carnival is coming. The region, though, runs on corruption, and organized crime is in the hands of Orest Ivanovych Mordovskiy, known as Morda, who also heads the local forest protection company. Nazar, hoping to keep his father at home, sets fire to Pamfir's documents, and the flames reach the local house of prayer. Making up for the damage means returning to the criminal circles and the smuggling routes he had left behind.
