Plot summary
John Radley grew up with a father who left, a mother who hurt him, and neighborhood kids who bullied him; his pets kept dying too. Gretchen, his first crush, was the one person who treated him kindly. That ended when the others dared him into a balancing act and a prank backfired, sending him down an old well onto rock. He has been semi-comatose at Oakhurst State for more than ten years, living on distorted memories. When those images overwhelm him one night, he wakes badly disfigured and brain damaged, unable to feel pain. What is left of his mind turns to the people he holds responsible and to Gretchen, who will receive what he takes from them.
