Plot summary
Naples, 1949. An accidental explosion takes Celestina Scognamiglio's home and her aunt Amelia, leaving the ten-year-old with one surviving relative: her sister Agnese, who had emigrated to New York years before. Carmine, a twelve-year-old street boy, is her companion; he gets by selling cigarettes and running small cons in the ruined city. At the port the two meet George, an African-American cook on the docked U.S. Navy ship Victory. A deal over a jaguar cub collapses, and Carmine follows him aboard the vessel, Celestina clinging to his boat. The children hide as stowaways as the ship heads for New York, until the purser, Domenico Garofalo, finds them and talks the captain into letting them stay aboard until they arrive.
