Plot summary

In 1968, a film crew spent time with Thelonious Monk and his musicians, tracing the pianist and composer through New York, Atlanta and a string of European cities. In New York the quartet performs at the Village Vanguard and cuts recording sessions for Columbia Records; in Atlanta the group appears at a jazz festival put together by George Wein. Charlie Rouse, Larry Gales and Ben Riley make up the quartet. On the road in Europe they are joined by Ray Copeland, Clark Terry, Phil Woods and Johnny Griffin, and everyone travels as part of a road company assembled for George Wein's Newport Jazz Festival, stopping in London, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Mainz and Rotterdam.
