Plot summary
Thelonious Monk, the jazz composer and pianist, is the subject of a 1968 portrait, the first of two parts. A camera crew spends time with him and with the members of his quartet. In New York the group appears at the Village Vanguard and records for Columbia Records. The quartet is Charlie Rouse, Larry Gales and Ben Riley. In Atlanta the band plays at a jazz festival that George Wein organizes. From there the musicians travel to Europe with the road company of George Wein's Newport Jazz Festival, and Ray Copeland, Clark Terry, Phil Woods and Johnny Griffin join the tour.
