Plot summary
Michael Clayton, forty-five and divorced, has spent years as the fixer at Kenner, Bach, and Ledeen, the New York law firm that cleans up other people's messes and sometimes its own. He is burnt out and owes eighty thousand dollars to a loan shark after his brother Timmy, a drug addict, spent the money the two had put into a bar, and the firm is going through a merger. Its senior litigator, Arthur Edens, has spent six years defending U-North, an agricultural conglomerate, in a three-billion-dollar class action over a weedkiller. Off his medication and manic, Arthur strips naked in the middle of a deposition in Milwaukee, and Michael is sent to bring him back under control. U-North's general counsel, Karen Crowder, has the company's defense to protect.
