Plot summary
Sixteen-year-old Trevor comes to Hooper Street Residential Assessment Center with his social worker, Harry Parker, after a charge of throwing a brick through a Pakistani man's window. There his punishment is to be determined. The deputy superintendent, Peter Clive, admits him and puts him in a room with Errol, a nineteen-year-old black adolescent he dislikes on sight though remains somewhat civil to. The staff want Trevor to accept the norms of society; he pays them no attention and answers with racial abuse. The next day he leaves the center to look for work, meets Errol, and the pair take a car to reach the job center.

The scripted ending, with Trevor in a borstal yard urging the other inmates to "dig for Britain", was ruined because Alan Clarke misread writer David Leland's word trenching and had the boys digging random holes. With no money to reshoot, the film ends instead on a freeze-frame of Trevor grinning in a police cell.- Tales Out of School became the first television series set as examined English Literature coursework, chosen by Cambridge University's Television Literacy Project and the IBA. Made in Britain was judged too provocative for O level and was put on A level syllabuses from 1986 instead.
- The opening scene runs on "UK82" by Scottish punk band The Exploited, and the drama's dialogue was later sampled at length by rapper Skinnyman across his album Council Estate of Mind.
