Plot summary
Emily tells her six-year-old son Paul the story of his life during a make-believe car trip in which he practices driving, and the flashbacks reach back to her own childhood with parents so absorbed in each other that she was left ignored. She wanted a child without a husband: after unsuccessful artificial inseminations she traveled seeking encounters with men, lost the pregnancy, and met a man named Paul at a hotel during a business seminar. Her second pregnancy gave her the son she calls Loverboy, and he calls her Miss Darling. When Paul sees other children going to school and asks why he cannot, Emily tries to keep him home to protect him.
