Plot summary
Sound engineer Phillip Winter receives a postcard from his friend Friedrich Monroe, a director who has been shooting a silent black-and-white film about Lisbon. Monroe asks him to come and record sounds for it. Weeks later Winter arrives and finds the house full of editing equipment and reels of film, but no director. The children who have been working with Monroe say he will return, though they cannot say when. Winter has come to work alongside him and now searches the city. He stays, drawn to Lisbon and to Teresa, the Portuguese singer he hears there, and begins recording the sounds of the unfinished film.
