Plot summary
Rick Carlson is a 32-year-old lifeguard in Southern California who lives on casual relationships and has no commitments. For the summer he trains Chris Randall, a college student hired as a weekend assistant. Rick's father keeps pressing him to find a real job that pays more. A high school friend named Larry, now a partner in a Porsche dealership, offers him a sales position and mentions that Rick's old high school girlfriend Cathy, newly divorced, is expected at their 15-year high school reunion. Wendy, a 17-year-old who has just moved to the area from San Diego, becomes infatuated with Rick, and he is wary of her because she is underage. Hoping to see Cathy again, Rick decides to attend the reunion.

- Sam Elliott, who plays lifeguard Rick Carlson, had worked as a lifeguard himself, and his parents were lifeguards too. He landed the part after director Daniel Petrie and Petrie's wife saw him on television in the film Frogs.
- Lifeguard finished shooting in August 1975, but Paramount kept it on the shelf until the following year. Sam Elliott turned down all television work during that wait because he hoped the film would establish him in features.
- Part of the 1976 film Lifeguard, starring Sam Elliott, was shot in the personal home of its director, Daniel Petrie.
