Plot summary
Commander Raiden serves Lord Bartok, a nobleman whose lands answer to a corrupt empire. Minister Geza Mott complains that Bartok's tribute is too small and has him beaten; Bartok retaliates, is brought to trial and condemns the empire for the honor it has lost. The Emperor's sentence falls on Raiden: he must put his own master to death. The clan is broken up and the estate parceled out, and Geza assigns the warrior Ito to keep watch on Raiden. A year later, Geza, now First Councillor, takes half the soldiers of his father-in-law Auguste to strengthen his new estate. Raiden drinks and sells his sword, his wife has left, and Geza grows easier about him.
