Plot summary
Abel Turner is an LAPD officer in Los Angeles who lives in the Lakeview Terrace neighborhood with his two children, Celia and Marcus, and keeps them under tight control. Newlyweds Chris and Lisa Mattson, an interracial couple, move into the house next door. On one of their first nights there, the Mattsons have sex in their swimming pool, unaware that the children's bedrooms overlook it. Abel sees that his children witnessed the scene and turns hostile toward the couple: he aims his home security lights into their bedroom and makes underhanded racial remarks to Chris about his marriage. Abel patrols the neighborhood on foot at night, a presence that comforts some residents, while his attention to the Mattsons becomes more aggressive.

- The plot was loosely based on real events in Altadena, California, involving an interracial couple and an African-American LAPD officer. The case was covered from 2002 in the Pasadena Star News and Pasadena Weekly; journalist Andre Coleman won a Los Angeles Press Club Award for his series, and the officer was eventually fired by the LAPD.
