Plot summary
Penelope Vardakis hires Nick Bali, a private investigator working in Athens and a former NYPD detective, to examine how her husband's twin brother Leo died on Crete. The police there treat the death as a climbing accident, and the Vardakis family, which owns a shipping company, wants no publicity that might hurt its stock. Nick reads the coroner's notes on Leo's injuries. Georges Mensah, who runs the inquiry, sends him away. Nick drinks to blot out memories of the family he left behind.
