Plot summary
Indonesia in the early 1900s is still a colony of the Netherlands, and on Java the noble families hold power under Dutch oversight. Schooling is reserved for nobility and royalty, and even women of royal blood are barred from higher education. Javanese custom gives a woman of Kartini's rank one purpose: to become the bride of a man with royal blood. Kartini, a nobleman's daughter, wants to study, and she holds that everyone should be able to, whatever their social standing or gender. To change the rules and traditions held sacred on Java, she has to defy her own family and her own culture.

- Producer Robert Ronny said Dian Sastrowardoyo was the first and only choice to play Kartini, and that making the film would have been hard had she not accepted. Director Hanung Bramantyo cast Dian, Ayushita and Acha in the main roles partly for their popularity among Indonesian women and their concern for women's issues.
