- The film runs a total of seven hours, so it was split into three volumes; Buya Hamka Vol. 1 is the first of them.
- Vino G. Bastian, who plays Hamka, was already offered the part in 2017 but turned it down because of scheduling conflicts; the cast was announced at a press conference in South Jakarta on 25 March 2019.
- The idea of a Hamka film was first proposed in 2014 by the Indonesian Ulema Council while Din Syamsuddin was its chairman, and screenwriter Alim Sudio took three years and twelve script drafts to finish it.
