Plot summary

George Joestar, a wealthy man in 19th-century England, takes in Dio Brando as repayment for a debt owed to Dio's late father, Dario. Jonathan, George's son, gains a brother and works at becoming a gentleman. Dio covets the Joestar fortune and turns Jonathan's own circle against him, so that the household scorns the boy. When Dio forces a kiss on Erina Pendleton, Jonathan's girlfriend, Jonathan fights him and wins. Blood spilled in the struggle reaches an old stone mask kept by the family, and the mask reacts. Jonathan finds out that the Aztecs once used such a mask to give its wearer immortality.

Cast

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood (2007)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Before making Phantom Blood, Hirohiko Araki drew a manga that resembled the work of Hisashi Eguchi, and his editor Ryōsuke Kabashima angrily told him never to draw anything so derivative again, pushing him in a new direction that led to the series.
  • Araki's distinctive character posing was influenced by a trip to Italy just before serialization, where he saw Gian Lorenzo Bernini's sculpture Apollo and Daphne at Rome's Galleria Borghese and found viewing it from different angles overwhelmingly beautiful and intense.
  • Araki gave the supporting character Will A. Zeppeli a mustache based on the painter Salvador Dalí and the Osomatsu-kun character Iyami, a gamble because mustachioed characters in shōnen magazines were seen as old and untrustworthy and could turn readers off.
  • SPOILERAraki bent the shōnen rule of the ever-progressing hero and had Jonathan Joestar die saving his wife and child, which he called unthinkable in a shōnen manga, because he wanted the Joestar blood and spirit passed to the second part's protagonist.
  • To draw the invisible power of Hamon, Araki came up with the idea of a character punching a frog that is left unharmed while the rock underneath it cracks open.
  • Because Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were popular at the time, Hirohiko Araki designed Phantom Blood's characters with muscular body types.
