Plot summary
Their teacher, Miss Shaw, reads to eight children sheltering in the cellar of their orphanage as bombs fall on England in 1940. The story carries them to a timeless, mythical island and to the tale of Darkness, who has ruled the world in cold isolation. Light enters her world, dazzling and quick, and after so long alone she gives in to his charm. He cannot bear her need to own him, and he vanishes, leaving stars in his wake. Darkness discovers that Light left her a gift: a child she names Yellow. Six more follow, Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. These seven, the Iris Warriors, bring color into her dull world, yet they refuse her embrace.
