Plot summary
Bones Conway and Jack Kaufman work at a Glendale discount electronics store and dream of opening their own shop, but after wrecking a rack of televisions on the job both are fired. Chasing quick start-up money, they join the Army Reserves, drawn in by a recruiting slogan about one weekend a month. Bones picks water purification because his brother was a pool man and the field looked free of combat. They meet Christine Jones, who wants infantry, and Fred Ostroff, a nervous dental student, at water purification training. The group calls itself the waterboys and returns to Glendale, until Libya's plans against Chad bring a call-up. In Chad, the reservists clash with the full-time soldiers, especially Staff Sergeant Stern.
