Plot summary
Naples, 1944. Bombing has wrecked the city in the wake of Italy's liberation, and Dean Barry, a 23-year-old American sailor, is posted there. He meets Lucia Stendardo, a young woman who has almost nothing, and falls in love with her. Two years later his service is over and he is compelled to return to New Jersey, while Lucia stays in Naples, alone and expecting their child. A son is born to her after he has gone. A World War II veteran by then, Dean comes back to a changed Naples, twenty-five years on, to get to know the son he left behind.
