Plot summary

Jack lives alone and sleeps through most days, leaving his apartment only for meals at a diner, mass at a church, bingo games, and visits to a hospital where an intern named Jeremy sells him blood. The routine holds back his urge toward cannibalism. Mobsters Steve and Short come looking for Jeremy. Then Jack's ex-girlfriend Gillian calls, asking him to find their daughter, Andrea, who had tried to reach him. Jack agrees but wants no more contact with Gillian. He locates Andrea and brings her to the diner, where Cara, a waitress who has a crush on Jack, meets her. While Jack and Andrea bond, he sees visions of a goateed old man in a porkpie hat. He also stops Steve and Short from kidnapping Jeremy. Andrea can see the old man too, though before only Jack could.
