Plot summary
Shakespeare's play moves to contemporary New York, where Elsinore Castle becomes Hotel Elsinore, headquarters of the Denmark Corporation. Claudius, Hamlet's uncle, is the firm's chief executive; Hamlet, a film student, is the son of Claudius's dead brother. The dialogue stays Shakespearean, but the world is built from video cameras, Polaroid photographs and surveillance bugs, and the ghost of Hamlet's father first appears on closed-circuit television. Ophelia, an amateur photographer, carries Polaroid pictures of flowers rather than real blooms, and the soldier Marcellus is reworked as Marcella, Horatio's girlfriend. Fortinbras expands by corporate takeover rather than conquest, aided by lawyers. Before the 'To be, or not to be' speech, Hamlet watches a video of the Buddhist teacher Thích Nhất Hạnh.
