Plot summary
Gary is a young man with no trade and no job when he is taken on at a nuclear power plant in the Rhone valley. He is hired as an outside sub-contractor whose work is decontamination. Gilles, a supervisor, brings him into the crew, and Toni, a veteran of the plant, shows him the routines. The job carries a radiation risk the men live with shift after shift, and Gary learns that being contaminated is a hazard of the ordinary working day rather than a distant possibility. He also begins a secret affair with Karole, who is engaged to Toni.
