Plot summary
Chris Rock starts from a question his young daughter asked him about her own hair and sets out to learn what counts as good hair among Black Americans, mostly Black women. He attends the annual hair convention run by Bronner Brothers in Atlanta and visits salons and barbershops at the center of the Black community. He looks at relaxers, which use sodium hydroxide to straighten hair, and at laboratories that study them, and goes to India, where tonsure ceremonies supply hair for the weaves sold at home. Stylists, customers, businesspeople and public figures describe the money the industry earns and discuss self-image. Men say they cannot touch their partners' hair; it is decoration.

- Chris Rock said he was inspired to make the film after his three-year-old daughter asked him, “Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?” He realized she had already absorbed the perception among some black people that curly hair was not good.
- Filmmaker Regina Kimbell sued Chris Rock Productions and HBO Films in October 2009, claiming Good Hair illegally copied her own documentary, My Nappy Roots: A Journey Through Black Hair-itage, which she said she had screened for Rock in 2007; a federal judge let Rock's film open as scheduled anyway.
