Plot summary
In Imperial Rome, during the reign of Emperor Domitian, Timo is a boy orphaned by the eruption of Pompeii and adopted by the general Chirone, who raises him at the city's most famous Gladiators' Academy. Timo would rather spend his days with his friends Ciccius and Mauritius than train at all, slipping away from his stepfather's sessions whenever he can. He has no wish to follow Chirone to gladiatorial fame. Then the lovely Lucilla comes into his life, and Timo decides to change his ways, draw out whatever valor he has in him, and become the gladiator of her dreams.
