Plot summary
Jason Voorhees' body, collected from Higgins Haven, is taken to a hospital morgue, where it revives and escapes. The next day, six teenagers drive to Crystal Lake: Paul and Samantha, Sara and Doug, Jimmy and Ted. They have rented a house next to the Jarvis family: Trish, her younger brother Tommy, their mother, and the dog Gordon. While walking, the teenagers come upon twin sisters Tina and Terri and swim with them; Trish is invited to a party that night. When the Jarvises' car breaks down, Rob Dier helps them and is brought back to their house.

- Director Joseph Zito secretly used the extra salary from his contract to hire Barney Cohen to write the screenplay, though Cohen remained credited for the film and later got into trouble with the Writers Guild of America.
- Judie Aronson was required to stay submerged in a freezing lake, which gave her hypothermia, and Peter Barton was genuinely slammed against the shower wall during filming. Jason actor Ted White threatened to quit when director Joseph Zito would not pull Aronson from the cold water between takes, and White later demanded his name be removed from the credits.
- Producer Frank Mancuso Jr. wanted to end the series because, no matter how much money the films earned, he felt nobody respected him for his producing work on it, and he also wanted to pursue other projects. The film was billed as The Final Chapter with Paramount's support, as slasher films were declining in popularity.
- Make-up artist Tom Savini, who had worked on the first Friday the 13th, returned for The Final Chapter because he wanted to help kill off Jason Voorhees, the killer he had helped create.

The Final Chapter was the first film in the series to have two survivors rather than one, and one of those survivors is a child, a break from the usual final-girl formula.- Frank Mancuso Sr. pushed the release up from October 1984 to April 13, leaving the filmmakers only six weeks to finish post-production. Paramount rented a Malibu house for them to hold editing sessions in, the only production help the studio gave.
- Camilla More first auditioned for the part of Samantha, but when the filmmakers learned she had a twin sister, Carey, they offered the sisters the roles of the twins Tina and Terri Moore instead.
