Plot summary
Lam Tsz-yuen comes to Hong Kong from Hunan with her mother to rejoin her father, Kok-man, who had earlier smuggled himself into the city. Everything in Hong Kong is new to her, and the family lives in poverty with a language barrier. Classmates bully her as a mainland immigrant. Kok-man is a drug addict and a thief. When he sees her eyeing a pack of candy in a store, he steals it for her, and Yuen, following his example, takes a watch from a classmate. Her mother discovers it and blames Kok-man for the influence he has on their daughter. The tension between her parents eases once her younger sister, Lam Tsz-kuet, arrives in Hong Kong to join them.
