Plot summary
June Angell looks after five children in a California foster home. Danny Milbright is the shy one, a boy who rarely speaks and whom at least one visiting couple rejects for that reason. When a gun is fired at a public event, the President of the United States escapes unharmed, and in the confusion his dog Teddy runs off. The White House says nothing about the missing dog. Teddy rides in a truck hauling pet food and reaches California, where Danny finds him. A phone number on the dog's ID leads to the White House, but Danny's call from California is not believed, and June Angell doubts the dog belongs to the President at all. Danny decides he must take Teddy back to Washington himself.
