Plot summary
Multinational drug companies held patent monopolies on antiretroviral treatment, and the account describes how affordable versions stayed out of reach for people with HIV/AIDS in Africa and elsewhere in the global south after 1996. Western governments, above all the United States, the European Union and Switzerland, backed the companies. The toll is put at ten to twelve million unnecessary deaths. Against that, a coalition formed: a treatment activist, a Ugandan AIDS physician, a generic drug maker, an intellectual property campaigner and two Nobel laureates. Shot on four continents between 2008 and 2010, it follows their campaign over patents, prices and public health.
