Plot summary
Hank Chinaski is an aspiring writer who struggles with alcoholism and holds a series of menial jobs in Los Angeles. He cleans a massive sculpture, delivers ice, works at a pickle factory, and works at a bicycle supply warehouse, and each job ends when he is fired. He has no qualifications, ambition or ethics. Through these jobs and the bars he drinks in, he meets eccentric characters who are frequently alcoholics. In a bar he meets Jan, who becomes his most consistent companion. Like him, she is an alcoholic. He moves in with her and becomes her lover and drinking partner. The two coexist comfortably in squalor.
